My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“The only constant in life is change.” When we hear that all too familiar phrase we probably smile and nod our heads in agreement. Yes, we think, that is certainly true in my life. My journey has taken some unexpected twists and turns. There is no doubt in my mind that today will not be tomorrow. However, when confronted with actual change, we may be less glib and more inclined to feel like the ground is shifting under our feet.
This issue of the State of Grace is replete with the changes coming to Grace Church. We will have a new Director of Christian Education, a new Music Director and a new Pastor. Change!
I resonate with the reflections of author Ralph Covey: “On this train ride we call life, a few people will ride with us for the whole trip. Most will climb aboard, ride for a while and disembark to continue their own journey. But in their absence, they leave a piece of themselves with us; just as they take a piece of us along with them.”
While we may agree that the only constant in life is change, our faith tells us that the only constant in life is God. All around us may be shifting and changing; but our God is steadfast. The Psalmist captures this perfectly:
O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from far away.
You search out my path and my lying down,
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
O Lord, you know it completely.
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is so high that I cannot attain it.
Psalm 139
Change is coming to Grace Church. However, the solid rock of our lives, remains. The God who knows you completely remains fully present and accessible in your life.
